On December 31, the iconic London bookshop Al Saqi Books, located in Bayswater, will close its doors for good. Founded in 1978 by the Lebanese André and Salwa Gaspard and the late Mai Ghoussoub, Al Saqi became a leading light for Middle Eastern expatriates, for visitors from across the region who were keen to obtain works banned in their own countries, and for local readers looking for the best-curated knowledge of the region they could find. For 44 years, the bookstore upheld freedom of thought and expression, cultural diversity, and pluralism. By opening its doors to all people, it dictated empathy and tolerance. As the year ends, Europe’s largest Middle East specialised bookseller bids farewell to the friends, authors, and readers who frequented it. This bookstore has witnessed the wars and revolutions of the region, that has documented and upheld the changes in our worlds. Year after year, despite challenges and threats, it has catered to all of us who still believe that books are the heart of a culture; that they can shape generations, nourish enlightenment, and inspire heroes of change. This closure was yet another unfortunate consequence of the economic collapse for the bookstore could no longer bear the sharp increases in Arabic-language book prices. It yet another testament, albeit a sad one, to the cultural role of Lebanon in the region and the world.

But also some good news; although Al Saqi Books will be closing for trade, its legacy shall live on in the award-winning independent publishing houses Saqi Books and Dar al Saqi, which will continue business as usual. If you are in London, the bookshop is holding a closing-down sale till the end of the month. Stop on by to show your support.

The world will be all the poorer without Al Saqi and the many stories it told. Goodbye
